Expansion rates are averages based on common EN→XX translation ratios for UI strings. Actual expansion varies by string length (short strings like button labels often expand more than long paragraphs), formality, and the translator's style.
Japanese, Chinese, and Korean typically contract in character count because those scripts pack more meaning per character — but each glyph takes more horizontal space in a fixed-width font, so your UI may still need more width budget than the character count suggests. The RTL badge marks right-to-left scripts that need layout mirroring.
